Beginning Level
Modern dance is a mode of dance born out of rebellion to express oneself in a way other than thru classical form. It is a way of expressing more realistic and humanistic emotions as opposed to the romantic idealism of classical ballet. There is no single specific technique in modern dance, but rather intellectual approaches to movement to create specific forms, and designs to achieve specific ends.
Thing beginning level students should be learning in modern class:
· Jump · Turn · Dart · Glide · Stretch · Bend · Rise · Gallop · Qualities (swinging, sustained, percussive) · Rhythm and Timing · Tempo · Syncopation · Symmetry · A-symmetry · Transition · Variety · Repetition · Floor Patterns · Breath Control

Intermediate/Advanced Level

There is no single specific technique in modern dance, but rather intellectual approaches to movement to create specific forms, and designs to achieve specific ends.
Thing intermediate level students should be learning in modern class:
· Same as beginning level students, but increasing the difficulty level of combinations. · Time Signature (half-time, double-time) · Collapse · Vibratory Movements · Suspended Movements · Focus · Dynamics · Spacial Design · Theme & Variations · Flat Back · Forced Arch · Contraction · Fall & Recovery · Knee Slides · Hinge · Prances · Placement · Pitch · Rebound & Release · Swastika · Triplet |
